واژه کنونی برف از واژه پهلوی وَفر wafr یا وفره گرفته شده است.برف در زبان کهن پهلوی به ریختهای اِسنیزَگ، اِسنیخر و اِسنوی snoy نیز آمده است که همگی با واژه snow در زبان انگلیسی و Schnee در آلمانی همریشه اند.

* دانه هاي برف به اين نحو تشكيل ميگردند:هنگامي كه رطوبت هوا اطراف ذرات معلق در هوا (گردو غبار و يا آلودگيهاي هوا) منجمد ميگردد تشكيل كريستالهاي يخ را ميدهند. با به هم پيوستن كريستالهاي يخ بيكديگر بتدريح به وزن كريستالها افزوده شده و نهايتان به سمت سطح زمين فرود مي آيند.

* شكل دانه هاي برف به ميزان سرما،رطوبت هوا و سرعت وزش باد حين شكل گيري دانه هاي برف بستگي دارد.

* هر دانه برف از 200-2 كريستال يخ تشكيل گرديده است.

* تمام دانه هاي برف 6 وجهي ميباشند.

* اندازه متوسط دانه هاي برف 1 سانتي متر ميباشد.

* بزرگترين ابعاد دانه برف ثبت گرديده 30*20 سانتي متر طول داشته كه در سيبري مشاهده گرديده است.

* در هر 30 سانتي متر مربع توده برف 10 ميليون دانه برف موجود ميباشد.

* دانه هاي برف شفاف ميباشند اما سفيد بنظر ميرسند.علت سفيد بنظر رسيدن دانه هاي برف اين ميباشد كه دانه هاي برف مانند منشور عمل كرده و تمام نور خورشيد رابطور يكسان بازميتابانند.

* هر دانه برف ممكن است تا آنكه به سطح زمين برسد 2 ساعت در راه باشد.

NEW YEAR TRADITIONS

Other traditions of the season include the making of New Year's resolutions. That tradition also dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions might include the promise to lose weight or quit smoking. The early Babylonian's most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.

The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In that year, members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers. It celebrated the ripening of the orange crop in California.

Although the Rose Bowl football game was first played as a part of the Tournament of Roses in 1902, it was replaced by Roman chariot races the following year. In 1916, the football game returned as the sports centerpiece of the festival.

The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year was begun in Greece around 600 BC. It was their tradition at that time to celebrate their god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. Early Egyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth.

Although the early Christians denounced the practice as pagan, the popularity of the baby as a symbol of rebirth forced the Church to reevaluate its position. The Church finally allowed its members to celebrate the new year with a baby, which was to symbolize the birth of the baby Jesus.

The use of an image of a baby with a New Years banner as a symbolic representation of the new year was brought to early America by the Germans. They had used the effigy since the fourteenth century.

"Happy New Year!" That greeting will be said and heard for at least the first couple of weeks as a new year gets under way. But the day celebrated as New Year's Day in modern America was not always January 1.

ANCIENT NEW YEARS
The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible cresent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison.

The Romans continued to observe the new year in late March, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

United States of America New Year

American New Years Customs such as Dance parties are thrown on New Year's Eve to see in the year. Times Square in New York City has a ball drop hosted by the television celebrity Dick Clark. This is broadcast all over the United States. At the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve people will kiss or honk car horns. Paper blowers and whistles are blown. A soul food of black-eyed peas and rice called Hoppin' John is eaten by some. Other foods that are eaten at New Year are cake and champagne.

In the US they believe that black-eyed beans are lucky.

They also watch the Championship football games in stadiums or on their televisions. They also in New York's Time Square they watch for the moment when a giant brightly colored electric apple is lowered to the ground at which time they start saying Happy New Year.

In South America Ano Viejo the New Year festival is celebrated by creating a fake person or dummy. The scarecrow looking person is completely dressed and stuffed with old newspapers and firecrackers. The dummy is usually placed outside the home. The scarecrow represents something that has happened during the last year. At midnight each family lights the dummy on fire. As the dummy goes up in smoke the firecrackers also go off to add to the festivities. The old year is forgotten and the New Year begins.

In Puerto Rico South America children enjoy throwing pails of water out the window at midnight. Some believe that this rids their home of any evil spirits.

In Bolivia families make beautiful little wood or straw dolls to hang outside their homes to bring good luck.

Christmas around the world: In Italy, children receive gifts from the good witch La Befana, old, bent and dressed in black. La Befana was a widowed, childless woman when the Three Kings passed on their way to see the Christ child. When they asked her the way to Bethlehem she was busy cleaning and sent them away. Realizing her mistake, she left to search for the Baby Jesus. To this day she is still searching going from house to house on Epiphany, January 6, leaving a gift for good children.

Russian children await gifts from Babouska, a farmer's wife who offered food and shelter to the Three Wise men on their journey to Bethlehem, Baboushka declined their offer of travelling with them to visit the Christ child. Realizing her error on the eve of Epiphany, she tried unsuccessfully to find them, but handed the presents she had intended for the infant Jesus to children she passed along the way.

In Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico and South America, the Three Kings or Wise Men bring Christmas gifts to children, while in France children eagerly await the coming of Father Christmas or Pere Noel who brings their gifts.

In some cultures, Saint Nicholas travels with an assistant. The old bishop Sinterklass arrives in Holland on December 6 in his red bishop's costume astride a white horse. In many port towns, he is said to have sailed in on a ship from Spain. Beside him walks Black Peter with a black sack and a book recording each Dutch child's behavior through the year. Good children receive a gift from the bishop while bad children may be carried away in Black Peter's sack.

In Germany Saint Nicholas also travels with a helper, known as Knecht Ruprecht, Krampus, or Pelzebock, and comes with a sack on his back and a rod or switches in his hand. Saint Nicholas gives gifts to good children, while those who have been bad are punished by the assistant with a few hits of a switch.

Swedish children wait for the gnome Jultomten, also called Julemanden or Julenisse, who dresses in red and carries a sack of gifts on his back. He flies in his sleigh pulled by the Julbocker, the goats of Thor, the god of thunder. Elves, called the Juul Nisse, hide in the attics of families throughout the year, eagerly waiting to help him. Children leave bowls of milk or rice pudding in the attic for the elves, hoping they will be empty in the morning.

In Austria and Switzerland it is Christkindl or the Christ Child who arrives bearing gifts. In some towns children await the Holy Child and in others Christkindl is a beautiful girl-angel who comes down from heaven bearing gifts.

And in England a thinner version of Santa Claus known as Father Christmas, wearing long red robes with sprigs of holly in his hair, delivers gifts to children.

هشت موضوع شگفت انگیز از زندگی آلبرت انیشتن، که شما هیچ گاه آنان را نمی دانستید.

بله،همگی ما می دانیم که انیشتن این فرمول[e=mc2] را کشف کرد. اما واقعیت آن است که چیز های کمی در مورد زندگی خصوصی اش می دانیم،خودتان را بااین هشت مورد،شگفت زده کنید!

1-اوبا سر بزرگ متولد شد
وقتی انیشتن به دنیا آمد او خیلی چاق بود و سرش خیلی بزرگ تا آنجایی که مادر وی تصور می کرد، فرزندش ناقص است،اما او بعد از چند ماه سر و بدن او به اندازه های طبیعی بازگشت.

2-حافظه اش به خوبی آنچه تصور می شود، نبود
مطمئنا انیشتن می توانسته کتابهای مملو از فرمول و قوانین را حفظ کند،اما برای به یاد آوری چیز های معمولی واقعا حافظه ضعیفی داشته است. او یکی از بدترین اشخاص در به یاد آوردن سالروز تولد عزیزان بود و عذر و بهانه اش برای این فراموشکاری، مختص دانستن آن [تولد ]برای بچه های کوچک بود.

3-او ازداستانهای علمی-تخیلی متنفر بود
انیشتن از داستانهای تخیلی بیزار بود. زیرا که احساس می کرد ،آنها باعث تغییر درک عامه مردم ازعلم می شوند و در عوض به آنها توهم باطلی از چیز هایی که حقیقتا نمی توانند اتفاق بیفتند میدهد.

به بیان او "من هرگزدر مورد آینده فکر نمی کنم،زیراکه آن به زودی می آید. به این دلیل او احساس می کرد کسانی که بطور مثال بشقاب پرنده ها را می بینّند باید تجربه هایشان را برای خود نگه دارند.

4-او در آزمون ورودی دانشگاه اش رد شد
درسال 1895 در سن 17 سالگی،انیشتن که قطعا یکی از بزرگترین نوابغی است،که تا کنون متولد شده،در آزمون ورودی دانشگاه فدرال پلی تکنیک سوییس رد شد.

در واقع او بخش علوم وریاضیات را پشت سر گذاشت ولی در بخش های باقیمانده، مثل تاریخ و جغرافی رد شد.وقتی که بعدها از او در این رابطه سوال شد؛او گفت:آنها بی نهایت کسل کننده بودند، و او تمایلی برای پاسخ دادن به این سوالات را در خود آحساس نمی کرد.

5-انیشتن علاقه ای به پوشیدن جوراب نداشت
انیشتن در سنین جوانی یافته بود که شصت پا باعث ایجاد سوراخ در جوراب می شود.سپس تصمیم گرفت که دیگر جوراب به پا نکند و این عادت تا زمان مرگش ادامه داشت.

علاوه بر این او هرگز برای خوشایند و عدم خوشایند دیگران لباس نمی پوشید، او عقیده داشت یا مردم اورا می شناسند و یا نمی شناسند.پس این مورد قبول واقع شدن[آن هم از روی پوشش] چه اهمیتی میتواند داشته باشد؟

6-او فقط یکبار رانندگی کرد
انیشتن برای رفتن به سخنرانی ها و تدریس در دانشگاه، از راننده مورد اطمینان اش کمک می گرفت. راننده وی نه تنها ماشین اورا هدایت می کرد، بلکه همیشه در طول سخنرانی ها در میان،شنوندگان حضور داشت.

انیشتن، سخنرانی مخصوص به خود را انجام می داد و بیشتر اوقات راننده اش، بطور دقیقی آنها را حفظ می کرد.

یک روز انیشتن در حالی که در راه دانشگاه بود، باصدای بلند در ماشین پرسید:چه کسی احساس خستگی می کند؟
راننده اش پیشنهاد داد که آنها جایشان را عوض کنند و او جای انیشتن سخنرانی کند،سپس انیشتن بعنوان راننده او را به خانه بازگرداند.

عدم شباهت آنها مسئله خاصی نبود.انیشتن تنها در یک دانشگاه استاد بود، و در دانشگاهی که وقتی برای سخنرانی داشت، کسی او را نمی شناخت و طبعا نمی توانست او را از راننده اصلی تمییز دهد.

او قبول کرد، اماکمی تردید در مورد اینکه اگر پس از سخنرانی سوالات سختی از راننده اش پرسیده شود، او چه پاسخی خواهد داد، در درونش داشت.

به هر حال سخنرانی به نحوی عالی انجام شد، ولی تصور انیشتن درست از آب در آمد.دانشجویان در پایان سخنرانی انیتشن جعلی شروع به مطرح کردن سوالات خود کردند.

در این حین راننده باهوش گفت "سوالات بقدری ساده هستند که حتی راننده من نیز می تواند به آنها پاسخ گوید"سپس انیشتن از میان حضار برخواست وبه راحتی به سوالات پاسخ داد،به حدی که باعث شگفتی حضار شد.

7-الهام گر او یک قطب نما بود
انیشتن در سنین نوجوانی یک قطب نمابه عنوان هدیه تولد از پدرش دریافت کرده بود.
وقتی که او طرز کار قطب نما را مشاهده می نمود، سعی می کرد طرز کار آن را درک کند. او بعد از انجام این کار بسیار شگفت زده شد.بنابر این تصمیم گرفت علت نیروهای مختلف در طبیعت را درک کند.

8-راز نهفته در نبوغ او
بعد از مرگ انیشتن در 1955 مغز او توسط توماس تولتز هاروی برای تحقیقات برداشته شد.
اما اینکار بصورت غیر قانونی انجام شد.بعدها پسر انیشتن به او اجازه تحقیقات در مورد هوش فوق العاده پدرش را داد.
هاروی تکه هایی از مغز انیشتن را برای دانشمندان مختلف در سراسر جهان فرستاد. از این مطالعات دریافت می شود که مغز انیشتن در مقایسه با میانگین متوسط انسانها،مقدار بسیار زیادی سلولهای گلیال که مسئول ساخت اطلاعات هستند داشته است.همچنین مغز انیشتن مقدار کمی چین خوردگی حقیقی موسوم به شیار سیلویوس داشته، که این مسئله امکان ارتباط آسان تر سلولهای عصبی را بایکدیگر فراهم می سازد.

علاوه بر اینها مغز او دارای تراکم و چگالی زیادی بوده است و همینطور قطعه آهیانه پایینی دارای توانایی همکاری بیشتر با بخش تجزیه و تحلیل ریاضیات است.
